Investors have become progressively attentive of the significance of environmental, social and governance (ESG) issues while estimating investment decisions, and ESG topics have also become priorities for leading securities regulators and stock exchanges. About US$2.7 trillion of assets are now managed in more than 2,900 ESG funds, according to Morningstar. The stock markets and investors have proven this by the fact that $649 billion was invested in ESG-focused funds globally through the end of November 2021 based on the latest Refinitiv Lipper data. Morningstar also reported that capital flows into ESG funds continue to increase with total assets invested in Asia-domiciled funds at US$36.3 billion at the end of June 2021. In another report by 2022 Global Investor Study, in an Asia-focused snapshot, found 54% of investors in Hong Kong said the types of sustainable funds they would most like to invest in are ones that focus on financial returns while integrating sustainability factors.
Since the mandatory disclosure of ESG reports by listed companies in 2015, Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing Limited (HKEX) has continued to enhance its ESG disclosure requirements. There were 15 internationally aligned green bonds and one green loan with the green bond issuance topping out at $2 billion in 2020 according to the Climate Bonds Initiative. The Green and Sustainable Finance Cross-Agency Steering Group has announced in October 2020 its intention to make climate-related disclosure in line with the TCFD recommendations mandatory by 2025. Each of Hong Kong’s 2,500 listed companies must put numbers on potential impact from extreme climate events like severe typhoons and rising sea levels, according to draft rules due for final approval in 2023. Any fund manager with a portfolio larger than US$1 billion must disclose the emissions data of companies they invest in according to the Securities and Futures Commission (SFC).
