HKGFA in Support of the TNFD Recommendations Hong Kong Launch Event

As part of our continuing initiative in the TNFD/ Biodiversity Workstream and the HKGFA Biodiversity Training Series, HKGFA is pleased to support the TNFD Recommendations Hong Kong Launch Event on 18 April 2024, co-organised by Swire Properties and the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (“TNFD”).

The TNFD Recommendations Hong Kong Launch Event served as the first official event organised by TNFD in Hong Kong to launch and promote the TNFD Recommendations to the local jurisdiction and market. Since the global launch of TNFD Recommendations at the New York Stock Exchange in September 2023, corresponding TNFD launch events have taken place in other jurisdictions and markets, and Hong Kong is the first Asian city to host this milestone event, encouraging corporates and financial institutions to disclose and manage their nature-related risk and opportunities. The TNFD seeks to provide decision-relevant information to investors and stakeholders to facilitate a shift in global capital flows towards nature-positive outcomes, which aligns with the goals of the United Nations’ Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework.

Ms. Salina Yan, JP, Permanent Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury (Financial Services), HKSAR Government gave Opening Remarks, highlighting how Hong Kong’s status as an international financial centre can help bring plans and actions together to promote sustainable transformation.

In her Opening Remarks, Ms. Chaoni Huang, Executive Vice President of HKGFA; Head of Sustainable Capital Markets Asia Pacific, BNP Paribas noted how nature-related disclosures, particularly in supply chains, represent a big step in ensuring sustainable business practices and climate-resilient economies. She added that with collective action, industry dialogue, and capacity-building events, resources can be effectively mobilised to slow biodiversity loss and bring trillions of dollars of new economic activity and job opportunities.

Following an introductory presentation by TNFD Technical Director, Ms. Emily McKenzie, HKGFA TNFD/ Biodiversity Co-chairs – Ms. Crystal Geng, Asia ESG Research Lead, BNP Paribas Asset Management, and Mr. Patrick Ho, Head of Sustainable Development at Swire Properties joined a discussion alongside fellow panelists from HKEX, The Hong Kong and China Gas Company, and The University of Hong Kong with insights into integrating nature-related considerations in the business decision-making process and how different sectors can work together using the TNFD recommendations to contribute to a nature-positive future for the world.

HKGFA stands ready to support TNFD in promoting the early adoption, integration, and capacity building in Hong Kong and beyond, and enable firms to assess their nature-related risks and opportunities through our TNFD/ Biodiversity Workstream.
